Tom concentrates his practice in intellectual property, with a particular emphasis on trademark, licensing and franchise law. He has extensive experience counseling clients on the selection, clearance, prosecution, maintenance, defense and enforcement of trademarks both domestically and internationally. He has successfully prosecuted hundreds of trademark applications for clients in such diverse fields as software, life sciences, telecommunications, publishing, manufacturing, textiles, e-commerce, and regularly prosecutes and defends matters before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.

Tom also has experience in copyright and trade secret law, as well as with intercompany agreements such as manufacturing, reseller, distribution, strategic alliance, e-commerce, non-competition, and other agreements. His franchise experience includes work for both franchisors and franchisees.

The International Trademark Association (INTA) appointed Tom to the Asia & Pacific / Canada Trade Mark Office Relations subcommittee of the Trademark Office Practices Committee for the 2007–2008 committee term. The committee’s mission is to review, assess and establish contacts with trademark offices in countries of Asia and the South Pacific region, with a special focus on India, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, as well as to re-establish and foster relations with the Canadian trademark office. He served on the Examination Subcommittee of the Trademark Office Practices Committee for the 2006-2007 committee term, during which time he assisted with the first revision of INTA’s Model Guidelines on Trademark Examination, which provides information and recommendations on trademark examination practices and procedures to trademark offices throughout the world. 

Currently Tom serves as a corporate trustee of the Acton Memorial Library, having previously served three terms as an elected trustee. Before joining MBBP, he was an associate with Sherin and Lodgen LLP, Boston. Prior to entering law school, he served four years in the United States Marine Corps and seven years with the Office for Information Technology at Harvard University.

Tom graduated from Skidmore College in 1983 with a B.A. in English and earned his J.D. at Northeastern University School of Law in 1998.
